Pipe Bomb Found in Minivan After Traffic Stop Near Mayberry Mall: Police

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — Mt. Airy Police say a pipe bomb was found inside a minivan after a traffic stop near Mayberry Mall on Tuesday afternoon.

Captain Barry VanHoy with city police says Surry County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a Dodge Caravan for speeding along Highway 52 near Frederick Street. The van pulled into the parking lot of Mayberry Mall.

Police say a K9 officer sniffed out drugs that were inside the van, which led to a search of the vehicle.

VanHoy says officers found a cylindrical object about 8 inches long with a fuse sticking out of its top in a backpack in the passenger seat.

City and county officials set up a perimeter while the State Bureau of Investigation bomb squad arrived at the scene.

Police say a bomb technician was able to get the explosive out of the van safely. The bomb has been taken to an undisclosed location for further investigation.

VanHoy says Glenn Springthorpe, 33, was charged with felony possession of a weapon of mass destruction, possession of meth with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A woman who was driving the van was not charged by police.

Police say Springthorpe did not give an explanation for having the bomb.
