The man who murdered two people in Friday’s London Bridge attack was once involved in an al-Qaeda-inspired plot to kill Boris Johnson.

Usman Khan, 28, was the youngest member of a nine-strong group of jihadists jailed in 2012 for planning to bomb the London stock exchange and the US embassy and target VIPs including Johnson, then the mayor of London.

It was described as one of the most significant terrorist plots in British history. Although just 19, Khan was considered by the judge to be a “more serious jihadi” than many of his fellow gang members when he was jailed indefinitely for public protection in February 2012.
